About Fortress Gold Group

Fortress Gold Group

Fortress Gold Group was founded back in 1995. In 2007, they become a privately held investment corporation. It is unclear who founded Fortress Gold Group or who the company's CEO was.

Even before the website stopped working properly, this information was not readily available. This is strange and raises some questions, since most precious metals companies list information about their founder and executive board in the "about" section on their website.

Fortress Gold Group's website listed a few promises to their customers. These promises included shipping metals quickly (within 72 hours of purchase), offering the quickest retirement conversions in the industry (just four days), delivering knowledge and advice to clients regarding market outlook, and being fully committed to helping each client grow their wealth.

Investing in Precious Metals

Fortress Gold Group

Fortress Gold Group allowed individuals to invest in precious metals. Since their website is currently down, it is difficult to share more information about the specific products they offered and how extensive their selection was. It is also difficult to determine whether they only offered gold and silver bullion or whether they also had the option to invest in platinum, palladium, or rare coins.

Precious Metals IRAs

Fortress Gold Group

Fortress Gold Group also allowed individuals to set up a new Precious Metals IRA or rollover an existing IRA to a Precious Metals IRA. Though, it does not appear they were a custodian company, so you would have also needed to work with an approved IRA custodian and used Fortress Gold Group to set up your IRA.

There isn't a lot of information about how their IRA services worked, but based on how several other gold investment companies work, we can make some educated guesses. It is likely that you would have needed to work with the IRA custodian to secure funding for your new IRA. This may have come in the form of a wire transfer from a bank account or rolling over the funds from an eligible retirement account.

Once that transfer was complete, you would have worked with a member of the Fortress Gold Group team to select the coins and bars you wanted to hold in your account.

Storage

Fortress Gold Group

The IRS does not allow individuals to hold the assets for their own IRAs. Precious metals purchased for an IRA must be stored in an IRS-approved depository. Fortress Gold Group worked with Brinks Global Services, a trusted name in storage.

It's likely that you've heard of Brink's Global Services before, or at least seen their highly secure armored trucks. Their storage options are equally, if not more secure, and use state-of-the-art technology to ensure investment are secure.

If you made a purchase for a personal investment through Fortress Gold Group, you could have chosen to have it shipped directly to you for storage in your home, a safe deposit box, or another secure location of your choice.

Fees and Commissions

It does not appear that Fortress Gold Group was very transparent about the fees they charged. Before the website was shut down, there was no information listed about the fees or commissions you would need to pay. This lack of information makes it hard to compare companies when you are trying to decide who to work with.

Customer Service and Support

Fortress Gold Group's clients and prospective clients were able to reach the company via phone or email. Their website did not have a live chat option, which is a nice feature when you're looking to get a quick answer to a more basic question.

Are There Any Red Flags for Fortress Gold Group?

Fortress Gold Group

Yes, there are some pretty big red flags for Fortress Gold Group. The biggest one is that they are not currently accepting new customers, and it appears the company is shutting down. The website will not open on most devices due to security/certificate concerns.

Below, you'll find reviews from the Better Business Bureau, Business Consumer Alliance, TrustLink, and Trustpilot. Is Fortress Gold Group a Scam?

Fortress Gold Group

It does not appear that Fortress Gold Group was a scam company. However, now that their website isn't opening properly, and it appears that they are not accepting new customers, we would not recommend using them to purchase precious metals (it sounds like you wouldn't be able to even if you wanted to, anyway).

Even if Fortress Gold Group was still fully operational, we'd still be steering you away and advising you to work with one of the other precious metals investment companies. One of the reasons for this is that while many reviews for the company were positive, some more recent reviews indicated that individuals had trouble getting through to a sales representative to assist them with a purchase or to address an issue they were facing.

Whereas many precious metals investment companies have received accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, Fortress Gold Group is not a BBB accredited business. They also only have a B- rating with the BBB (with an A+ as the highest possible rating). The reason for this poor rating from the BBB is listed as failing to respond against a customer complaint.

Fortress Gold Group also only offered individuals the opportunity to invest in gold and silver. Purchasing palladium or platinum was not an option, so with Fortress Gold Group, you wouldn't have been able to diversify your portfolio as extensively as you can with some other precious metals investment companies.

Before shutting down, the website also did not contain any information about fees and commissions. This information is important for helping individuals choose the right company to work with, and the lack of transparency makes you wonder how much you'll have to pay.

Fortress Gold Group also did not offer live chat services, unlike some other gold investment companies. You would have only been able to reach the company using phone or email, which aren't always the most convenient options.

  • You could purchase gold and silver coins and bars.
  • Fortress Gold Group used to offer IRA services to individuals.
  • Secure storage options were available with Brinks Global Services.
  • The company could be contacted via phone or email.

Pros:

  • Fortress Gold Group used to assist individuals in adding precious metals to an IRA.
  • They worked with the highly trusted Brinks Global Services for precious metals storage.
  • Orders shipped quickly.

  • You couldn't invest in platinum or palladium with Fortress Gold Group.

Final Verdict

So, should you use Fortress Gold Group? No, we definitely would recommend against working with Fortress Gold Group. It appears that doing so isn't even an option since their website isn't opening, and they aren't accepting new clients right now. Even if Fortress Gold Group was still fully operational today, we'd still suggest choosing one of the other precious metals investment companies out there.

We don't think that Fortress Gold Group is a very good company and we believe that there are better companies out there to make your investment with.
